Sounds of Belonging

Sounds of Belonging is a 4-session multimedia project for over-55s at our community centre, exploring sound, music, and memory as ways to express belonging, loneliness, and cultural connection. Co-designed with participants, the project will invite people to share the sounds that evoke home – whether that’s Lewisham, another place, or a moment in time – and to discover what happens when these sounds meet. The series will begin with reflective writing and discussion about the “sounds of home” and listening to local music archives. In the second session, participants will share a song or recording that holds personal meaning. The third will focus on creating accompanying visual artwork and collecting sounds from their surroundings, and the fourth will bring everything together into a shared listening and viewing session shaped by the group. If the project resonates, a second four-week phase in March will develop these materials further, working towards a collective piece to be shared publicly.
