Why we’re doing this

There is an increasingly pressing problem of Holiday Hunger among school age children in London[1]. Recent reports estimate that 18% or one in five London pupils will be at risk of holiday hunger this summer. The Love Grub Summer Club project aims to support those in need in our local area by offering a children’s activity and tea time meal provision through the summer holidays. This project is aimed at supporting young children. The aim is to provide a nutritious meal twice a week and community support to children and their carers.

The club will be free and run from 4:30-6:30pm on Tuesdays and Fridays from 31st July to the 24th August. There will be an activity aimed at young children, hot meal and then a chance to use the garden/ library after the meal.

Children will be asked to attend with a carer or adult family member, and we hope that those caring for children feel as welcomed and appreciated as the children.

Who is involved?

Love Grub Summer Club is a partnership project between St Catherine’s Church, the Bebright Project and the Telegraph Hill Centre. The team currently leading this project includes Camilla Harper, Karen Palmer and Rev. Sheridan James.

Camilla Harper, a member of St Catherine’s church, is acting as the Project Manager. She has made links with Good Food Lewisham[2] and has started attending the Food Poverty subgroup which brings together different local organisations involved in food poverty support such as Fairshare, Foodbank and also provides information and support on setting up meal provision services.

Karen Palmer from Bebright/CCC has volunteered to manage the catering and is qualified to take on this role.

Camilla and Karen will attend each Love Grub session, with Camilla acting as the co-ordinator, and Karen as cook and co-ordinating kitchen volunteers. Karen will also supervise the use of the library.

St Catherine’s Church Parochial Church Council (the PCC) have approved this project and committed a £700 budget to help it run, as part of the church’s commitment to loving our neighbour and social justice.

The church can afford to support the project, but if there are individuals out there who would like to make a direct donation to this particular piece of work please use a yellow Gift Aid envelope available at the Sunday service at St Catherine’s Church and making sure to mark it “Love Grub Summer Club”, or drop by your donation on Sunday between 10 and 11am.
